Can you feel it? The new year brings with it a great opportunity for a fresh start!
It’s the perfect time for reflection and the chance to make changes in your life, both personally and professionally. Why not set yourself some goals, so when next December rolls around, you can look back at how far you’ve come?
Here are a few things to think about as you set goals for 2022.
Where do you stand today?
Take a good look at your life. Do you like your job? Do you like the people you work with? Do you feel bored or challenged? If things are going well, that’s great! But where would you like to be in a year’s time? Or two years? If you’re unhappy, is it time to look for a new job? Make a list of what you like in a workplace and what you don’t, what skills you have and what you’re interested in, and start considering how those things line up.
What do you want to do?
Good goals are specific, manageable and, in some way, measurable. For example, if you want to learn a new language, decide which language it’s going to be. Determine that you want to have mastered a number of phrases or sentences within a certain amount of time and that you’d like to double that amount a few months later. You can keep a list of the words and phrases you feel comfortable with to see if you’ve met your goal. Simple! If you want to add a new skill, find a class and set aside the time required to practice and learn.
Break up your goals into pieces.
The best way to give up on a goal is to find it overwhelming or feel like it’s unattainable. That sets you up to feel frustrated before you even begin. Instead, take each goal and break it down into parts. If you want a new job, start by refreshing your resume. When you’ve completed that, start to look for jobs that match your skills and interests. Decide how many positions you’d like to apply for each day, week or month, then keep track of your progress. Every little step helps!
Celebrate the milestones.
If you’re going to be putting hard work into achieving your goals, you should also take the time to recognize your success and progress. Each step toward your goal is taking you further on the path to where you want to be than where you were the day, week or month before. Learning that new language, or that skill, or finding that new job — it all adds up to a better life!
