Are you the happiest when you’re outside? Does anything improve your mood like beautiful weather and a nice breeze? Is a day spent working in the yard your idea of a perfect one?
You might want to consider a job as a groundskeeper! Not everyone is meant to have a desk job, or a 9-5 that keeps them inside all the time. If you like being outside and working in nature, a job in groundskeeping could be everything you’re looking for.
Here are three reasons to consider working in groundskeeping professionally.
On-the-job training means there’s an opportunity to learn while doing.
Most landscaping and groundskeeping jobs require only a high school diploma or GED, which means you don’t have to know everything about this kind of work to apply. Companies don’t automatically expect you to have years and years of experience or specialized training; they’re happy to work with someone who’s eager to learn and teach them the business! If a company requires certain certifications or training, they’ll help you get it because it benefits the company too.
It’s a physical job that keeps you moving.
If the idea of sitting down all day makes you uncomfortable or puts you to sleep, groundskeeping is a job for you! You’ll be moving around, planting, mowing, digging, covering, cutting, etc. There’s no time to sit and stay still! There are plants and equipment to move and carry, yards and fields to walk across, and when you finish in one location, you’re on to the next.
You can work for yourself.
People who start on a groundskeeping team can build a career that allows them to work for themselves and start their own crew or company one day. As you progress through your career, you can get additional training and certifications that allow you to expand your expertise, pick up contacts and eventually branch out on your own, growing for yourself a great career that rakes in a good deal of green! (There are a few gardening puns in there for you, just for fun.)
