3 Hacks to Improve Your Own Career “Luck”

We all have that friend who seems to trip into good luck at work. They weren’t looking for a new job but were recruited into something that’s absolutely perfect for them. Or your colleague mentioned an idea as a joke, and it ended up being the innovation your company was looking for, and now they’re getting promoted. What gives?

It seems like some people have all the luck in the world when it comes to their careers. If you’re wondering why you can’t have some of that or why things aren’t easier for you, there’s good news. There are things you can do to improve your career luck! Try these three things:

Figure out your goals and then talk about them.

People can’t help you get what you want if they don’t know you want it. If you want a promotion, talk to your manager about your intentions. Find out what you’d need to do in order to get it. Then set about making it happen. If you talk to people in positions of power and authority at work about your intentions of building your career, they can help you understand where you are currently and what would need to happen to move up to that next level. Make sure you’re ready to commit to what they say before having the conversation and make sure you’re dedicated to doing the work, but this might provide the best and clearest path forward.

Surround yourself with good people who are also hard workers.

We all have those friends at work who are good for a laugh and encourage our little bits of bad behavior just for fun. But there are also those people at work who know when it’s time to buckle down and get things done. If you want to advance your career, or even if you just want to feel like you’re earning more respect from your team, spend more time and take more cues from the hard workers, the ones who always seem to get the most work done in the least amount of time because they know it’s better to cut out distractions. They’re the ones with the best project and time management skills and can focus like a laser to get their most difficult tasks done on time. Learn from them and pick their brains about how they’re able to be so successful.

Understand that the way forward involves dedication and sacrifice.

Goals and aspirations are just nice thoughts if you’re not willing to put in the work to achieve them. There are no shortcuts. There is no hack for success other than persistent effort and drive to get the job done. If this is what you want, understand that there will be days when you might need to be the one to pass up happy hour or a long lunch in order to complete the tasks needed to make things happen. Remind yourself that this is what you want; this is what has to get done in order to reach those goals and have the success you want. Remember that it will all be worth it!
